I'm All Sentimental
Jul. 30th, 2005 12:37 pmLately, there's been a bigger rash of bad!fic in Buffyverse fandom than normal. There's also been the reemergence of omg!-crit-is-so-mean so most of this fic has been mocked in private im sessions, over the phone, or in flocked posts. I'll be the first one to admit that I mock and I do so mostly in private. I'll also admit that I've made people cry in college-level intro creative writing classes over their crap stories and I'm sure I've done it with a few beta projects. I've also gotten into heated fights with best friends over grammar.
My basic two thoughts are 1) post/publish fic publicly and you will get negative feedback and 2) grammar is good. You can either take crit and use the legitimate stuff to make your writing better or you can be Anne Rice.
up_your_peach shares her thoughts on crit and public posting/publishing. I absolutely agree with the last paragraph of the essay.
liz_marcs discusses why grammar is essential to good writing. This essay brought me to tears. It also has a list of free grammar resources.
As always, keep writing.
