Name a character/real person from one of my fandoms/shows/anything and I'll give you:

(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon
(b) a reason he/she sucks
(c) a reason he/she is amazing
(d) five things that I'd like to see happen to them
(e) five people that I can't ship that character with and why

I have a lot of fandoms, so if I've mentioned that I watched/read something, you're probably safe to ask.

[livejournal.com profile] mosca wrote me a brilliant fic for [livejournal.com profile] femslash10 The Thing With Feathers (The Authority, Angie/Shen). It's super awesome. You should read it.

----

I found this post insightful on the ways fannish internet patterns are changing. Mostly because a lot of people on LJ tend to focus a lot on LJ vs DW.

That said, I will not post comments from flocked posts on Twitter or Facebook and expect you to do me the same courtesy. Same as I would not connect your LJ handle to your real life name and expect you to do the same for me.

Public posts are fair game, and they always have been.

If you want to post your comments from my public journal to Twitter or Facebook, whatever makes your feed boring or causes your grandma to wonder what "I'll be in my bunk" means.

If you want to link my public posts on your Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, other blog, Delicious account, etc., again it's public.

I saw someone worried about homophobic or general bigot relatives of others popping up. Be assured that I treat all intolerant people (your grandma or my grandma) the same way. But I'd say the likelihood of that is slim to none, and more likely that your grandma's going to want to know why you're reading a fic with a pony play warning and can you please explain rimming to her.

Pingbacks are enabled, but screened, as I find them useful. I do agree that ones coming from flocked posts should be disabled in the general LJ functionality.

With all these male writers in fannish media, let's face it, it's hard to find a male character to enjoy these days. I mean, a lot of them are just big Mary Sues with boring back stories and uninteresting plots. For every amazing male character like Charles Gunn or Midnighter (more awesome than Batman), we get a slew of disappointing male characters in their wake. At best, most male characters are annoyingly stereotypical and, at worst, are introduced as pointless eye candy.

I could've gone on forever, but here's 10. (Okay, there's actually 12, but we have some pairs who are basically the same characters, only taller or blonder.) My disappointing male characters )

A response to this post.

Who would you nominate?

Hello, Femslash10 Writer,

As you can probably see from my smattering of pairings, I'm not attached to any one pairing in a fandom. It's a big femslash party. I'm a variety is the spice of life reader so feel free to run with the story. I like plot-driven stories as well as good character studies. I'm attracted to the "strong" woman type of character, the smart ass, and the ones who take care of themselves. Cut so the flist can skim by )

Anyhow, thanks for writing me a story. I'm sure it will be fantastic.

After far too many years of having the same layout, I went for a change. Of course, I spent a lot of time wrestling/re-learning LJ's change your style system since I hadn't ever changed anything on the newest (old already) system.

***

I just started the 6th Sookie Stackhouse book, but I think I'll have to put it down. First, because they start to really annoy me if I don't read "real" literature in between. (I use "real" because I'm a jaded person with an English degree.) And second, because I didn't read the short stories and feels like Harris wrote the 6th book thinking you'd read all the shorts.

***

Normally, I'm not one to be all "the sky's falling" when it comes to LJ. Actually, I still don't think it's falling. However, the newest way LJ is trying to make money is through affiliate programs.

Note: If you enacted ads on your own page to make affiliate revenue for yourself, this is not applicable to you and will probably mess up your ads if you execute this code.

What's an affiliate link: An affiliate link is where a special code's attached to an outbounding URL to a e-commerce shop. For my example, let's say it's a link to Amazon. When that link's clicked by you from LJ and you buy something on Amazon, a percentage of your money goes to LJ. (Amazon pays out up to 15%. I don't know what rate LJ gets.)

What LJ's doing: LJ's hired this URL service to add LJ affiliate links to all outbounding links from LJ on every post, whether it's public, flocked, or private.

What people are panicking over: 1) Someone's tracking your URLs even in flocked & private posts. 2) LJ's making money off your links.

Why I don't think it's panic worthy: 1) LJ tracks all your URLs anyway. You are using their system, and if you trust them enough to use the service, I don't see why you wouldn't trust their business partners. 2) Most internet users click on affiliate links all the time and have no idea. What do you think all those coupon sites do?

Why I removed my link: I have a permanent account. I've paid LJ for their service. I don't put affiliate links on my own sites.

How you can turn off this feature:

Go to the admin console.

Paste in: set opt_exclude_stats 1

Hit 'execute' after.

I have a friend who's looking for Dr. Horrible/Firefly crossover where Mal/Captain Hammer is analogous to Clark Kent/Superman with time travel. Anybody seen anything like this out in the wilds?
